Common climbing protocols
| Workout | Work | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Repeaters | 7 s hang × 6 | 3 s between hangs, about 3 min between sets |
| Max hangs | 10 s on a hard hold | 2 to 3 min |
| 4×4 | 4 boulder problems in a row | About the same time as the climbing, 4 rounds |
| Competition bouldering | 4 or 5 min per problem | The same length between problems |
Fingerboard training stresses tendons that adapt slowly. Warm up well, build up gradually, and stop if your fingers hurt. For other intervals, use the interval timer or the EMOM timer.
Questions people ask
What is a 7:3 repeater?
A hangboard set where you hang for 7 seconds and rest for 3, six times in a row, usually followed by a few minutes of rest before the next set.
How long should I rest between boulder attempts?
For hard attempts, about 3 minutes. Shorter rests build endurance; longer rests let you try at your limit.
How long is a bouldering competition rotation?
Usually 4 or 5 minutes on each problem with the same amount of rest between them, depending on the event.
