Why does New Year start in the Pacific?
The International Date Line runs through the Pacific Ocean, so the islands just west of it are the first to see each new day. In 1995 Kiribati moved the date line east around its Line Islands so the whole country shares the same date, which put Kiritimati on UTC+14, the earliest time on Earth. Samoa jumped across the date line in 2011, skipping December 30 entirely.
