How these times are worked out

Sunrise and sunset are when the top edge of the sun meets the horizon, allowing for the way the atmosphere bends light. First and last light are civil twilight, when the sun is 6° below the horizon and there's still enough light to see outdoors. Times are usually within a minute or two of official tables; hills, buildings and weather change what you actually see.
