Questions people ask

How many time zones are there in the world?

There are 24 one-hour zones in theory, but countries use nearly 40 different UTC offsets on land, from UTC−12 to UTC+14, including half-hour and 45-minute offsets such as India (UTC+5:30) and Nepal (UTC+5:45). The IANA database tracks over 400 named zones because regions with the same offset can have different histories and daylight saving rules.

Why are time zone borders not straight lines?

In theory each zone is 15 degrees of longitude wide, but countries choose their own time, so borders follow national and state lines. China spans five theoretical zones but uses one, while France, with its overseas territories, uses twelve.

What time zone is used at sea?

Ships in international waters use nautical time zones: straight 15-degree bands from UTC−12 to UTC+12, shown in pale colors on the map. Many ships simply keep UTC.

Does this map show daylight saving time?

Yes. Colors follow the offset in effect right now, so a region shifts color when its clocks change. Click any area to highlight every place with the same time.
