    Days of the week

The seven-day week goes back to ancient Babylon and spread through Judaism, Christianity and Islam. English day names come from the Sun, the Moon, and Norse and Roman gods: Tiw (Tuesday), Woden (Wednesday), Thor (Thursday), Frigg (Friday) and Saturn (Saturday).

    Questions people ask

What day of the week was I born?

Enter your birth date above. The calculator shows the weekday along with how many days ago it was and which years your birthday falls on the same weekday again.

How do you work out the day of the week for any date?

Computers count days from a fixed starting point. By hand, the best-known method is John Conway's "Doomsday rule": in every year, 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12, the last day of February, 5/9, 9/5, 7/11 and 11/7 all fall on the same weekday.

Why does my birthday move one weekday each year?

A 365-day year is 52 weeks plus one day, so a date moves forward one weekday each year, or two after February 29 in a leap year.
