How to change the time on your Android phone
On Samsung Galaxy phones open Settings → General management → Date and time. On Google Pixel and most other Android phones open Settings → System → Date & time. Turn off the automatic switch to set the time yourself, or leave it on to keep the phone in sync.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings and tap General management.
- Tap Date and time.
- Turn off Automatic date and time. To pick the time zone yourself, also turn off Automatic time zone. The manual options only appear once these are off.
- Tap Set date or Set time, make the change and tap Done.
- To change the zone, tap Select time zone and choose your region and zone. The phone still adjusts for daylight saving time in that zone.
Google Pixel and most other Android phones
- Open Settings and tap System.
- Tap Date & time.
- Turn off Set time automatically, then tap Date or Time to set them.
- For the time zone, turn off Set time zone automatically and tap Time zone.
Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi and others use similar menus with slightly different names. The quickest way on any phone is to open Settings, tap the search bar and type date.
From the Clock app
On phones with Google's Clock app, open Clock, tap the ⋮ menu or More, choose Settings, then Change date & time. This opens the same settings as above.
Switch to 24-hour time
- Samsung: in Date and time, turn on Use 24-hour format.
- Pixel and others: in Date & time, turn off Use locale default if you see it, then turn on Use 24-hour format.
Phone showing the wrong time?
- Wrong by exactly an hour or more: the time zone is wrong. Turn on the automatic time zone, or pick the right zone by hand.
- Automatic time zone is wrong: some phones use your location to set the zone. Check that location is on, or set the zone manually.
- Wrong by a few minutes: turn the automatic time off and on again and make sure the phone is connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- Tablets without a SIM: they set the time from Wi-Fi, so connect to the internet first.
A wrong clock can stop sign-in codes, banking apps and secure websites from working, so leave automatic time on unless you have a reason not to.
Check that it worked
Open the online clock on the device. It compares the device clock with internet time servers and tells you if it is off, and by how much.
