Questions people ask
What is a Julian date?
The term is used two ways. In astronomy, the Julian Day Number counts days since noon on January 1, 4713 BC. In business, the military and food packaging, a "Julian date" usually means the year plus the day of the year, such as 26292 for October 19, 2026.
How do I read a Julian date code on food?
Most codes are YYDDD or YDDD: the first one or two digits are the year and the last three are the day of the year. 26292 is day 292 of 2026, which is October 19. Paste the code into the converter above.
Is the Julian date the same as the Julian calendar?
No. The Julian calendar is the calendar Julius Caesar introduced, which most countries replaced with the Gregorian calendar from 1582. Julian dates and Julian Day Numbers are just ways of counting days.
