From Paris jeweler to watch icon
In 1904 Louis Cartier made a flat, square wristwatch for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviator who needed to check the time without taking his hands off the controls. The Santos is one of the first men's wristwatches ever made. In 1917 Louis designed the Tank, inspired by the outline of the Renault tanks of World War I, and it went on sale around 1919. A century later both are still in production almost unchanged. See the full Cartier story.

The best Cartier watches for men
- Santos de Cartier: the sporty choice, with an exposed-screw bezel and a quick-change bracelet; the large size is about 40 mm.
- Tank Louis Cartier or Tank Must (large): the classic rectangular dress watch.
- Pasha: round, with a crown cap on a chain; bold and 1980s.
- Ballon Bleu: round with a blue sapphire crown guard, from 33 to 42 mm.
Buying a vintage Cartier
- Paris, London or New York: before the 1970s, Cartier's three houses made watches separately. Dials signed "Cartier Paris" are especially sought after, and London-made white gold Tanks are among the most collectible, but each has its own following.
- Must de Cartier (1977 onward): vermeil, meaning gold-plated sterling silver, usually quartz. They are the most affordable way into vintage Cartier.
- Check the dial and hands: refinished dials and replacement hands lower the value. Look for the hidden "signature" sometimes concealed in a numeral on older dials.
- Get papers or an authentication: Cartier is one of the most counterfeited brands, so buy from a reputable dealer.
Bust-down and iced-out Cartier
A "bust-down" or "iced-out" Cartier is a Santos, Panthère or other model with diamonds added after it left the factory. They are popular on social media, but aftermarket stones are not recognized by Cartier, can complicate servicing, and usually lower resale value. Cartier's own factory diamond models are a safer choice. See plain jane vs iced out.
