What is a quartz watch, and how does a quartz movement work?

A quartz watch keeps time with a battery and a tiny quartz crystal cut in the shape of a tuning fork. Electricity makes the crystal vibrate exactly 32,768 times a second; a chip counts the vibrations and sends a pulse to a tiny motor once a second to move the hands. That's why quartz watches are typically accurate to about 15 seconds a month.

How a quartz movement works, step by step

  1. The battery sends a small current to a circuit.
  2. The quartz crystal, a sliver shaped like a tiny tuning fork, is piezoelectric: when voltage is applied it flexes, and when it flexes it produces voltage. In a circuit it settles into vibrating at one extremely stable frequency, 32,768 times a second.
  3. The chip counts those vibrations, halving the count again and again until it gets exactly one pulse per second.
  4. The stepper motor receives each pulse and turns a tiny gear one step, moving the seconds hand, and through more gears the minute and hour hands. That's why most quartz seconds hands tick once a second.

Digital quartz watches skip the motor and gears and send the count straight to an LCD screen.

Why exactly 32,768?

32,768 is 215. A simple digital circuit can divide by two very cheaply, so after 15 halvings it gets exactly 1 pulse per second. The frequency is also high enough to be above human hearing and makes a crystal small enough to fit in a watch while using very little power. The same frequency runs the clock in your computer and phone.

The quartz revolution

Quartz clocks existed in laboratories from the late 1920s, but they were the size of cabinets. On Christmas Day 1969, Seiko sold the first quartz wristwatch, the Astron, for about the price of a small car, accurate to ±5 seconds a month. Within a decade quartz watches became cheap and everywhere, and Switzerland's traditional watch industry collapsed in what is called the "quartz crisis", until the Swatch helped revive it in 1983.

Questions people ask

What is a quartz watch?

A watch that keeps time with a battery-powered quartz crystal vibrating 32,768 times a second.

Are quartz watches good?

Yes. They are more accurate than mechanical watches and need almost no maintenance. Even luxury brands such as Cartier and Grand Seiko make excellent quartz watches.

How long does a quartz watch battery last?

Typically 2 to 5 years, and some up to 10. Solar quartz watches recharge from light.

Why does my quartz watch skip every few seconds?

That's usually the low-battery warning. Replace the battery soon.

What does 'quartz' mean on a watch dial?

That the watch uses a quartz movement rather than a mechanical one.
