Why are Rolex watches so expensive?
Rolex watches are expensive because Rolex makes almost everything itself, including its own gold alloys and steel, assembles and tests every watch by hand to an accuracy of −2/+2 seconds a day, and backs it with a five-year warranty. Demand also far exceeds supply, so Rolex holds its value better than almost any watch, which makes buyers willing to pay. A steel Submariner Date lists at about $11,350 in the US in 2026.

9 reasons Rolex costs so much
- It makes nearly everything in-house. Rolex designs and produces its own movements, cases, dials, bracelets and hairsprings, and it runs its own foundry that casts its 18 ct gold alloys, including the pink Everose gold. Doing it all internally costs more, but gives total control over quality.
- Special materials. Rolex's steel, called Oystersteel, belongs to the 904L family of alloys, which is harder to machine than the 316L steel most brands use but resists corrosion better and takes a brilliant polish. Bezels are made of Cerachrom ceramic that won't fade.
- Hand assembly and finishing. Machines make the parts, but skilled watchmakers assemble and check the movements and polish the cases and bracelets by hand.
- Tested beyond chronometer standards. Every movement is first certified by COSC, the official Swiss testing institute (−4/+6 seconds a day). Rolex then tests the finished, cased watch again for accuracy (−2/+2 seconds a day), water resistance, self-winding and power reserve. It calls this the Superlative Chronometer standard.
- A five-year warranty. One of the longest in the industry, shown by the green seal tag.
- Built to last for generations. A serviced Rolex from the 1960s still runs. Many owners hand them down, which spreads the cost over decades.
- Supply is limited. Rolex makes an estimated million or so watches a year but does not expand fast enough to meet demand, so popular steel models have waiting lists at authorized dealers.
- It holds its value. Because demand exceeds supply, many Rolex models sell for close to, or above, list price used. A watch that loses little value is easier to justify paying for.
- The brand. Rolex has spent a century building the most recognized name in watches, through sport (tennis, golf, motor racing, sailing), exploration (Everest, the deep sea) and famous wearers. You pay for that status too.
Why are luxury watches so expensive in general?
The same forces apply to every fine watch brand, not just Rolex. A mechanical movement has 100 to 300 or more tiny parts, many finished by hand, and a complicated one can take months to assemble. Production runs are small, so costs per watch are high. Swiss labor is among the most expensive in the world, and the "Swiss Made" rule requires most of the work to happen there. Precious metals, sapphire crystals and ceramic add more. Finally, luxury watches are priced partly as status objects: a brand's history, rarity and resale value are part of what you pay for. That is why a quartz watch that keeps better time can cost a hundredth of the price.
Is a Rolex worth the money?
As a tool for telling time, no watch is worth thousands: a $20 Casio or your phone is more accurate. As a well-made object that can last a lifetime and keep much of its value, many buyers think so. Be wary of treating a Rolex as an investment: the pre-owned market has swung up and down sharply since 2022, and the record prices you see on our most expensive Rolex page are for rare vintage pieces with famous owners, not everyday models.
What is the cheapest Rolex?
The least expensive new Rolex models are the time-only Oyster Perpetual watches in steel, which list for well under the Submariner. Prices rise with complications (date, GMT, chronograph), precious metals and gem-setting, up to the platinum Daytona at about $84,600.
