The story of the Carrera
Jack Heuer, great-grandson of founder Edouard Heuer (1860), took over the family firm in 1962. A year later he launched a clean, highly legible chronograph for racing drivers and named it after the Carrera Panamericana, a road race across Mexico in the early 1950s so dangerous it was stopped after five editions. The Carrera became the watch of motorsport, worn by Formula 1 drivers in the 1970s.
In 1985 Heuer was bought by TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde), a company best known in Formula 1, and became TAG Heuer. In 1999 the luxury group LVMH bought TAG Heuer for about $740 million.

Calibre 5 vs Heuer 02
Calibre 5 is a robust three-hand automatic based on the Swiss Sellita SW200; it keeps entry Carreras affordable. The Heuer 02 is TAG Heuer's own chronograph movement, with a column wheel, vertical clutch and about 80 hours of power reserve. If you want a Carrera chronograph, the Heuer 02 is the one collectors prefer.
Aquaracer and Monaco
- Aquaracer Professional 300: TAG Heuer's dive watch, about $2,050 (quartz) to $3,550 in 2026.
- Monaco: the square chronograph from 1969 made famous by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans; about $6,550 to $6,750 for the 39 mm Heuer 02 version.
