What is the Holy Trinity of watches?
The "Holy Trinity" is collectors' shorthand for Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet. All three are Swiss, have made watches for more than 150 years without a break, and are famous for the hardest complications: minute repeaters, perpetual calendars and tourbillons. The label is informal; no official body awards it, and some collectors argue that A. Lange & Söhne or Breguet deserve a place.
Who owns the watch brands?
A surprising number of famous names belong to three groups:
- Swatch Group: Breguet, Blancpain, Omega, Longines, Rado, Tissot, Hamilton, Swatch and others.
- Richemont: Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cartier, IWC, Panerai and others.
- LVMH: TAG Heuer, Zenith, Hublot and Bulgari.
The big independents are Rolex and Tudor (owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, a charitable trust), Patek Philippe (the Stern family), Audemars Piguet (the founding families), and Breitling, Richard Mille and F.P. Journe.
What is the most expensive watch brand?
By auction records, Patek Philippe: it holds the top spot (CHF 31 million for the Grandmaster Chime) and most of the top ten. By typical new prices, Richard Mille and the Holy Trinity brands start where most luxury brands stop. See the most expensive watches ever sold.
Why are Swiss watches so prized?
Switzerland became the center of watchmaking in the 1500s and 1600s when Protestant reformers in Geneva banned jewelry and goldsmiths turned to watches. The craft spread into the Jura mountains, where farmers made watch parts through the long winters. The "Swiss Made" label is protected by law: at least 60% of the manufacturing cost and the key steps must be Swiss. Read the full story in our history of timekeeping and the watchmakers.
