Questions people ask

What is an area code?

The first three digits of a 10-digit phone number in the US, Canada and the Caribbean (the North American Numbering Plan). Each area code covers a region, so it tells you roughly where a number is from.

How can I tell the time zone from an area code?

Look up the area code here. Most area codes are in one time zone, but some, such as 850 in Florida or 208 in Idaho, cover two; the page shows both.

Are 800, 888 and 877 area codes?

They are toll-free codes, not tied to any place, so they have no time zone.

Does the area code show where someone is right now?

No. People keep their numbers when they move, and many calls use internet phone numbers, so the area code only shows where the number was first issued.
