Timeline meaning: what is a timeline?
A timeline is a list or line of events in the order they happened (a history timeline), or a schedule of when things will happen (a project timeline). On social media, your timeline is the feed of posts in time order.
Three common uses
- History: events placed along a line by date. Our history of timekeeping is organized as one.
- Plans and projects: the steps and their dates: "The timeline is: design in May, launch in July."
- Social media: the stream of posts, newest first or ranked.
How to make a simple timeline
- List the events or tasks.
- Give each a date (or a duration, for plans).
- Sort them in order.
- Draw a line and mark each one, or put them in a two-column table: date and event.
Working out the dates between steps is easy with the date calculator.
Timeline vs. time frame
A time frame is the window ("within six weeks"); a timeline is the sequence of things inside it. See time frame or timeframe.
