Egg timer
Pick how you like your eggs and press Start as soon as the eggs go into boiling water. The timer rings when they are done, then counts the ice bath. Times are for large eggs straight from the fridge.
How long to boil eggs
| Yolk | Time in boiling water |
|---|---|
| Soft, runny yolk | 6 minutes |
| Jammy | 7 minutes |
| Medium, soft but set | 8 minutes |
| Hard-boiled | 10 to 11 minutes |
| Very hard | 12 minutes |
For large eggs straight from the fridge, lowered gently into water that is already boiling. Take off about 1 minute for medium eggs or room-temperature eggs, and add about 1 minute for extra-large eggs. At high altitude, water boils at a lower temperature, so eggs take a little longer.
Tips for perfect boiled eggs
- Lower the eggs in with a spoon so they don't crack on the bottom of the pan.
- Keep the water at a steady, gentle boil.
- Move them straight into ice water when the timer rings. It stops the cooking and makes the shells easier to peel.
- Older eggs (a week or two) peel more easily than very fresh ones.

Questions people ask
How long do you boil an egg?
From boiling water: about 6 minutes for a runny yolk, 7 for jammy, 8 for medium and 10 to 12 for hard-boiled, for large eggs straight from the fridge.
Do you start the timer when the water boils?
Yes. These times are for eggs lowered into water that is already boiling. If you start eggs in cold water, the timing depends on your stove, so it is harder to repeat.
How long should eggs sit in ice water?
About 2 to 3 minutes for soft eggs you want to eat warm, and around 5 minutes for hard-boiled eggs you plan to peel or chill.
Why is there a green ring around my yolk?
It forms when hard-boiled eggs are cooked too long or cooled too slowly. It is harmless; cook for less time and chill the eggs in ice water right away.
