Questions people ask
What is the Qibla direction?
The direction Muslims face in prayer: toward the Kaaba in Makkah. It is given as a compass bearing from true north along the shortest path over the Earth's surface (a great circle).
Why is the Qibla northeast from America, not southeast?
Because the shortest path over a globe is a great circle. From New York it heads northeast, about 58° from north, over the Atlantic; on a flat map that looks wrong, but on a globe it is the shortest way.
How accurate is the phone compass?
Phone compasses can be off by several degrees near metal, magnets or electronics. Calibrate by moving the phone in a figure 8, and stand away from cars and steel. The bearing in degrees is exact; the live compass is only as good as your phone's sensor.
