How to calculate time between two times
- Convert both times to 24-hour time. 2:45 PM becomes 14:45.
- Subtract the start from the end. 14:45 − 09:15 = 5 hours 30 minutes.
- If the end time is earlier than the start, the period runs past midnight: add 24 hours. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
- For decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60: 5 hours 30 minutes = 5.5 hours.

8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours. Take off a 30-minute lunch and it's 8 hours.
How do I calculate hours that go past midnight?
Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. 10 PM to 6 AM: (6 + 24) − 22 = 8 hours. The calculator does this automatically when you leave the dates blank.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 hours.
