Contraction timer

Tap Contraction started when one begins and tap again when it ends. The timer works out how long each contraction lasts and how far apart they are (start to start), with averages for the last hour. Always follow the advice of your midwife, doctor or hospital about when to call or go in.

When to call

Your midwife, doctor or hospital will tell you when to call or come in, and that advice comes first. Some use a guideline called 5-1-1: contractions about 5 minutes apart, lasting about 1 minute, for at least 1 hour. Call right away, whatever your contractions are doing, if your waters break, you have bleeding, your baby is moving less than usual, or you are worried. This timer is a tool for keeping track; it can't tell whether you are in labor.

Questions people ask

How do you time contractions?

Time how long each contraction lasts, from start to end, and how far apart they are, from the start of one to the start of the next. Tap the button at the start and end of each one and this page works it out.

What is the 5-1-1 rule?

A guideline some care providers use: contractions about 5 minutes apart, each lasting about 1 minute, for at least 1 hour. Follow whatever your own midwife or doctor has told you.
